About Dupa Incense: how our incense encyclopedia works
An open encyclopedia of the world's incense, in English and Indonesian.
Why Dupa Incense exists
Perfume has rich online encyclopedias, but incense has very few, and hardly any are available in Indonesian, even though the archipelago has supplied the world's aromatics for centuries. Dupa Incense pairs dupa, the Indonesian word that comes from the Sanskrit dhupa, with its English name, and is here to fill that gap.
How the information works
- Scent profiles and smoke levels are editorial estimates based on the general character of each style or product. They aren't lab results or community votes.
- Material lists show what is typical for a style. Makers rarely publish full recipes, so a specific product may differ.
- Traditional entries describe a broad style or raw material, not one specific product.
- Dupa Incense doesn't show ratings or reviews yet, because it has no community votes to base them on.
- Traditional uses are given as cultural context and are not medical advice.
Sources and verification
- Every incense page lists the sources it was checked against, and says whether the check was full or partial.
- Many product details come from retailer listings, because makers rarely publish full information. Listings can be wrong or out of date.
- Where sources disagree, the entry says so rather than picking one silently.
Images
The smoke artwork on each page is generated from its scent profile. It is an illustration and doesn't show the actual product or packaging.
Our partnership
Dupa Incense is run by a partner of Dupalo, an Indonesian incense maker listed here, so pages about Dupalo carry a notice. The catalog and the Almanac don't give Dupalo extra weight in their order or matches. We aren't affiliated with any other listed brand. Brand and product names belong to their owners.
